Marcia Moss Lewis's remembrance:

I remember the death of my uncle Edward Arthur. He was the twin brother of my aunt Emma.
Edward Arthur enlisted in the army. He was sent to the Phillipines. I do not not recall how ling he had been there. One day he was swimming and some distance from him a boat turned over with four people in it. Uncle Edward was quite a swimmer. He rescued those four people but was utterly exhausted when it was over. Not long after, he became very ill. My grandfather Arthur was notified that his son was very ill with fever, etc. He was put on a boat the army notified my grandfather he would be in a certain California hospital and that he could not survive.
My uncle Tom Arthur went to the hospital in California and was with his brother when he died. He brought my uncle's body home to bury in Williamsburg. I was very little girl and that was my first experience with death.
