Will Arthur wrote this poem in memory of his wife in 1954.
Twenty four years ago I stood on that spot,
Many friends stood by, most of whom I've forgot.
But not her whose body they left there that day,
Just a body from which she had gone away.
Today, once again, I stood on that spot.
And Thought, foew of those frends now think of this lot;
For the know, in their hears, she is not there,
Just a granite slab and a nameplate where
The shates of two stately oaks overlap
On a sloping sward, where one could take a nap.
But I thought I could sleep just as well elsewhere;
An empty cocoon, why should anyone care?
And any who might, erelong will be gone,
To strangers twould be just another headstone.
